Why “Lingua Viva” ? [2 of 3]

I knew that I needed a new name for my business, one that would be legible to both English speakers and French speakers.
“French Avec Cecile” no longer made sense.
I made lists of words that were the same in both languages, cognates, and all kinds of possibilities.
Eventually, I realized that trying to incorporate both languages into one name was not going to work.
I asked myself: What do English and French have in common?
There are many correct answers to this question: long histories, a connection to Canada (the country that I have called home since 2018), storied literary traditions…
And many, many words with a common Latin root.
I decided that my business’ new name should be in Latin to honour that shared heritage and common ancestor.
Lingua Viva means “Living language,” ou en français, “Langue vivante.”
Many people know that “Lingua” means language because of the expression “Lingua franca.”
Viva is Latin for “living,” reflecting the ongoing evolution of modern languages, and my commitment to helping people learn in a contemporary, dynamic way — not by endlessly drilling boring grammar exercises.
And “Langue vivante” is in common usage in the Francophone world, and a nod to my past experience as an “assistante de langue vivante” when I worked in a Lycée in the Ardèche region of southeastern France.
Bringing together coaching techniques as well as traditional pedagogical approaches, Lingua Viva offers something unique: a bespoke approach, guided by the needs and goals of each individual learner.
